Sydney Airport: Australia’s number one airport for passenger traffic

Sydney Airport (SYD) is Australia’s busiest by quite some way – in 2016-17 it handled 42.6 million passengers, offering direct flights to well over 80 domestic and international destinations. Its busiest international routes demonstrate the importance of the Asian and Pacific markets, with Auckland, Singapore and Hong Kong taking the top three spots. Los Angeles and Dubai are fourth and fifth respectively. In terms of domestic routes, the Melbourne-Sydney route is extremely busy, carrying almost twice as many passengers as the next-busiest route to and from Brisbane. Gold Coast and Adelaide take the next two places. Trips to Europe are easy too, with generally just one connecting flight to take. For example, Air France and partner airlines will take you between Paris and Sydney via Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi or Guangzhou.

Did you know?

Passengers on a flight leaving from Sydney Airport (SYD) over the next few months may get to enjoy the airport’s centenary celebrations. Sydney will officially be 100 on November 9th 2019, making it one of the world’s oldest airports still in use.

Sydney is home to Australia’s two oldest surviving European buildings – the former sailors’ home of Cadman’s Cottage in the Rocks is probably best-known, but Elizabeth Farm in Rosehill is actually over 20 years older.

Sydney Airport is located 5 miles south of Sydney’s city centre. The international terminal is typically accessed from the M1 and M5 from the city centre and the A1 or M5 from the west or south. The exit to the airport is on Marsh Street. Domestic and international terminals have different parking options. All car parks at the international terminal are within a 7-minute walk of the terminal and include a Guaranteed Space option (only bookable online).

The quickest way from city centre and Sydney’s southwest to the international terminal is via the T8 Airport and South line - from St James station to the international airport station it’s a 17 minute ride, (departures up to every 6 minutes on weekdays, operational 7 days a week).

Sydney Buses’ route 400 runs between Bondi Junction and the airport, stopping at UNSW and Westfield Eastgardens. It’s a 45 to 50 minute ride from UNSW at Anzac Parade. The route 420, meanwhile, runs from Burwood to Eastgardens via the airport.

Limos, taxis and rideshare services (Go Catch, Ola, Shebah and Uber) are all available at SYD.
